“Where” you ask?  It’s about removing barriers.  We train everywhere!  Living room, kitchen, Troutville park, Botetourt Sports complex, and on the Appalachian Trail.  We also have dedicated, private space available close to Daleville Town Center (if you’re concerned about others watching).  Training in nature is the most ‘natural’ and fun way to build advanced functionality.  We also incorporate some of our training around productivity…actually getting stuff done around the home!…not full Mr. Miyagi style but a little bit in that same vein.

Prepping for a hot yoga class?

Having logged well over 10,000 hours in hot yoga rooms around the country, I’m gonna be real about the sweat!  If you are well-hydrated, it feels amazing!  So, Hydrate well!  Be aware of how much sodium you've had in the last 24-48 hours.  Add electrolytes to your water if need-be.   Some people like fruity sports drinks.  Many people like water with a pinch of salt, a pinch of sugar, and fresh cut lemon starting at least 3 hours before a good yoga session.  Bananas are great.  Lots of yogis LOVE coconut water...plenty of potassium.  Don't eat any food 2-3 hours before class time.  Often you will be fine with a small smoothie/shake or something that digests relatively quickly an hour before class, but generally speaking, it's best to practice yoga on an empty stomach.  If your stomach is really growling, consider something very small to eat, low in fiber, at least 30-45 minutes before class, just to make it through.  Focus should be on body and breath, not a funny-feeling tummy.

Many practitioners drink coffee before class,  There are some benefits.  First time doing hot yoga?….maybe best to go without coffee.
Coffee will only add to the dehydrating effects. Drink lots of water, several hours before class!  It takes awhile for liquid to absorb into your system.  You don't want to be in class with a tummy-tank full of liquid sloshing around.

Wear shoes or sandals that are easily removable.  As a sign of respect for the Appalachian Trail, there are no shoes allowed on the yoga room floor.  Bring a yoga mat, large towel, and water to class.  I have extra yoga mats you can borrow if you give me a heads up.  Towels with stripes can be useful for aligning in some of the poses, but it's not necessary.  Gym shorts and a shirt are fine.  You don't need anything too fancy or too tight or tiny...unless that works for you.  No fashion judgements here!  You might experiment with several yoga outfits over time, and then find what gives you the best view of body alignment in the mirror, breath-ability, and comfort...although many yoga practitioners become content with being uncomfortable:)  Drink lots of water, way in advance.  Did we mention the water thing?  Finally, clear your mind from expectations and comparisons.  Beginner’s mind manifests quality.  Always be kind and forgiving to yourself!
